Axis Bank UPI SDK

Context

At Olive Crypto I built Axis Bank's UPI SDK from scratch and took it to production in 10 months, then integrated it into the parent app.

Problem

CodePush conflicted with the parent app's dependencies, so the SDK needed another way to ship over-the-air updates.

What I built

• The SDK's 37+ specialized APIs: P2P and P2M payments, balance inquiry, beneficiary management and MPIN changes.
• A production TurboModule bridging JSI and Fabric with native Android and iOS modules for real-time transaction handling.
• A custom, in-house over-the-air update system.
• The SDK's integration into the parent app.

Engineering highlights

1. Off the legacy bridge

   The TurboModule bridges JSI and Fabric with native Android and iOS modules to power real-time UPI transaction handling, replacing legacy bridge-based communication.

2. Our own over-the-air updates

   After I found dependency conflicts between CodePush and the parent app, I built an in-house OTA update system so the SDK could keep shipping updates with near-zero downtime.

Outcome

• The SDK went from scratch to production in 10 months.
• It supported processing of 700M+ monthly UPI transactions at a 93% approval rate, with decline rates kept under 7%, contributing to an 18% share of India's UPI market.
